Ah, Valentine's Day- the marmite of the holidays. You either love it or you hate it. Actually I'm somewhere in between, I hate the tacky commercial stuff and soppy trite messages but I love any excuse to show your love in a meaningful way to your beau. What I mean is I hate the teenage version of it- the idea of some sweaty pubescent boy clutching a tacky teddy and a card containing a meaningless poem about love for the poor embarrassed crush that doesn't return those sentiments. The whole scenario evokes the smell of Lynx Africa and friend zoning. And if you didn't get that horrifying experience as a teen, then it's easy to be even more cynical about the bullshit that is V-day.

But I get it. Some people aren't great at expressing their feelings and this is a way to do it using someone else's words. Like facebooking song lyrics or instagramming inspirational quotes. And maybe this makes it as meaningful to their special someone as a penned sonnet.
I for one am just happy with a personal card from my significant other. Just tell me how great I am.
Take your other half out for a meal and enjoy some good food. Have a proper 'date'. It's the perfect excuse to take time out to show your loved one that you care about them. You can be cynical and say that you can set aside time on any day to do this- but when do you actually get around to it?

Anyway, enough of that. My outfit is an homage to unrequited love- a mixture of pastel pops and widow chic. I'm trying to step out of my usual skater dress shape into something more modern and loose. I'm not quite convinced by it yet but at least I can get through my special Valentine's dinner in it- it's pretty roomy. I even managed to roller skate in it quite comfortably! The voile panel at the bottom is quite subtle but I think will stand out against bare legs. Just not in February.

The adorable rose hat was made by Helen, because I'm her Galentine. (Maybe that's why I love it- two lots of cards or gifts telling me how wonderful I am?!) and I wore these adorable candy floss hairclips by Alternate Normality. They've just stocked their latest nautical collection and I'm hooked (those lobsters though?).
I finished off my look with one of their rings and sugary sweet nailcals from DIY Nails.

Whether you are loving or dreading it, I hope you enjoy Valentine's Day. Just don't take it too seriously- or wear Lynx body spray.
