I'll wear whatever I feel like today. GOSH!

It has been a long term plan of ours to do an Unlikely Style Icon of the Napolean Dynamite film but now seemed like the perfect time because this week is our blog birthday! Yep, it's been four years of dressing up and documenting these weird concepts. You can look back on our annual celebrations here (who can forget the time we dressed up as each other? Scarred for life).

I'm a huge, huge Napolean Dynamite fan. Actually, it makes up most of the gif interaction between Helen and myself over on twitter. If you haven't seen this charming film already, go and do it now. And come right back here and tell me it's a bit weird and slow moving and you don't really get it. Then watch it again and fall in love with it, like Helen did. (Do the same with Eagle vs. Shark, which I forced upon her too.) Don't worry, there are no spoilers in this blog post.. unless you count these sweet moves and some quotes snuck in.

Normally with Unlikely Style Icons, the point is to make the look wearable. And dare I say, on trend? Let's review it anyway:

It's the worst day of my life, what do you think?
Firstly, I am so embarrassed by my hair. Apart from being not very Napolean Dynamite, it's just terrible.  I'd planned a fun vintage pin up version of his classic curls by re-creating my Bombshell Betty look but my pincurls just would not play ball. At all. It happens sometimes (or often, if you're a bit crap, like I am), when they just won't mould into the shape you want. We were under time pressure to take the photographs, so after the fifth attempt to tame my mop, I cried and then did my best to tidy up the bird's nest into some semblance of a hairstyle for these photos, before I went straight from the shoot to afternoon tea with my mum (yeah, she wasn't very impressed with it either...)

The oversized 80's aviator glasses are Napolean's top accessory and a must for this look. Luckily, they are having a bit of a moment right now, so they are easily found on the high street. I picked up my pair from H&M. Since these aren't prescription, my eyes are much larger (i.e. actual size) than I'm used to seeing, and I find it quite unsettling not having visible eyebrows. I think I'll keep these glasses strictly for costumes. It's not my best look.

With Napolean, the focus isn't really on his eyes. He mostly speaks with them closed so you notice his pouty lips. (He needs his chapstick, Kip!) I've emphasized mine with a red lipstick to match my t shirt.

I have to give huge props to DIY queen Helen, for making this VOTE t shirt for me. Originally, it was to say "vote for Helen", like Pedro's campaign in the film, but I thought a simple 'vote' was much more topical. Using slogan tees to share your views on the political climate is very on trend right now (See? I'm making it work for fashion.) We're seeing a lot of feminist tees around but I'd consider these purchases carefully- it's great when you're investing in something that'll donate to the cause and not just some high street money maker. Or get creative with your own!

Faded wash jeans are ND's staple and I'm basically living in these cut offs right now, although they have a weird high waist/ dropped crotch combo. I sadly couldn't get my hands on a pair of moon boots so I've finished off the look with some chunky brogues I picked up recently from TK Maxx. My ankle is on the mend but still noticeably larger than the other one! I removed my support bandage for the photos because vanity. Some of these moves hurt more than I'm giving away though- I'm all about the pizzazz!

I can't wait to share the photos of the two of us (yes, dancing) on the anniversary but in the mean time I want to say a huge thank you to Helen for being such a great blogging partner over these years. She puts so much effort into our fun concepts, whips up accessories whenever I'm in need and picks me up when I'm not sure of myself.

She's the Pedro to my Dynamite!
