I've been keeping up to date with the goings on of the new Flamingosaurus Rex studio that's just opened up in Edinburgh from the lovely Lucie Wang, fellow blogger and #ScotGalGang's other pink haired member. She recently invited me and a few other Edinburgh Bloggers to have a go at styling and modelling one of the studio's featured designers, I Dream of Shapes. I hadn't heard of the brand before so I was interested to check them out. A collaboration between Berlin and Edinburgh based designers Samantha Bowie and Lorna Mackie, the clothes are all hand sewn in house by the team so it's ticking the Wardrobe Convo's boxes for local and ethical. While I'd seen them in photographs, I can't tell you how stunning these pieces were in real life. I expected monochrome but the fabrics used are sumptuous- really luxe, mixed with rich jewel colours that hang beautifully. We had photographer James Keyte on hand to capture the pieces in all their glory:

Emily from Frankly Ms Shankly
Sophie from Sophia Violet Blog
 Jen from Tartan Brunette
Cera from Cera Kamonji
Katie from Little Kaatie

We were given free rein over the rack to choose whatever we liked. This is always a point of anxiety on shoots I think- no one wants to pick last and have something they don't like. And sizing? Samples are always tiny and weird. Not the case at all here! Each of us are a different height, size and shape and we all seemed to gravitate towards different styles so that there really was no Top Model-esque tantrums. In dress sizes, I was the biggest girl there and mine fit like a dream. It felt like a dream. I'm not normally one for flashing my tum but the outfit looked so great I hardly even thought about it. I think being surrounded by such supportive, down to earth women helped.

Actually, the whole evening was a lovely, relaxing experience (the prosecco probably helped.)
Bloggers- fashion bloggers in particular- have a bit of a bad rep when it comes to friendliness. It's dog eat dog, and all that. Perhaps that is true of larger cities but it's certainly not my experience in the Dundee or Edinburgh communities that we're part of. At worst I've seen insecure girls avoid contact, or a business-like perfunctory greeting as others 'work' a room. Nothing wrong or scary about that.
But at best I've seen laughter, fun, and friendships and networks grow. Although many of us hadn't met, I already knew all of the girls from various events and the #ScotGalGang twitter group so for me it felt like getting ready for a night out with friends. I lent my shoes to Ruth, and Sophie offered to do my makeup, pulling out an enormous bag of goodies to give me the highlighted glow of my dreams. In return I styled her outfit. That white pencil skirt was made for her though, wasn't it? She looked amazing. Actually, everyone did. Despite having a very coherent collection to pick from, we each brought a different style- from Ruth's chic streamlined silhouette to Emily's edgy Gaga take. Katie brought the sexy cold shoulder, while Cera was very cool and Jen was girly and fun. I think I'm coveting everyone's pieces but quite honestly my favourite was the pink full skirt I got to wear. What was my 'look'? I'm not sure but the ladylike skirt had the most gorgeous texture and there was so much material- perfect for twirling!

Although Lucie was cunning in staying behind the camera (those behind the scenes photos are hers), she was great at organising and taking care of all of us. What a host! Plus she provided pet therapy in the form of her beautiful dog, Rhod.

We had a moment. Or five. Basically, when I wasn't shooting or helping other girls get ready, I was playing with the dog. I was gutted I couldn't make the launch night of Flamingosaurus Rex to see Rhod in his bow tie and catch up with these beauties again, but I kept up with the gossip and it looked like a great night. I'm hoping to pop in for a nosey myself soon.

In the meantime, thanks to I Dream of Shapes and Flamingosaurus Rex for a fun evening of playing dress up! You really should check them out.
