I'm not sure how 'unlikely' Wes Anderson's dreamy style is, given that we bloggers probably all want a slice of the muted bright colours and signature cutesy nostalgia in our lives. We've been talking about doing a Moonrise Kingdom shoot for a really long time now, but our blogging schedule never seemed to have a gap. I'm so happy that we are spending the whole month of October getting back to Wardrobe Convos basics with Unlikely Style Icon shoots. Looking for inspiration in the seemingly uninspirational is a great way to try out new looks and we especially love a horror combo. Expect things to get progressively creepier as we go, but for now it's all sunshine and summer vibes.

If you don't know the film, where have you been? It's a fantastic coming of age film about pubescent romance, filled with adventure and a brilliant cast. I initially wanted to be Social Services, played by Tilda Swinton (who I both love and kind of fear) because I could totally rock that hair, but decided on Suzy Bishop, one of the main characters of Moonrise Kingdom and love interest of Helen's character Sam (look out for our adorable couple shots soon). Suzy is a troublesome pre-teen with a love of French pop and odd literature.

Her outfit is very wearable and pretty easy to put together, given how recognisable it is (especially as a couple costume). I wish I had her beret and cape coat (swoon) but her main outfit is a simple pink peter pan dress. My dress is a slightly racier number with a sheen to the waxed cotton fabric that contrasts against the ditzy floral collar, and that keyhole cutout (apologies as I know you're not accustomed to my cleavage being on show but I've got me a big ol' pair of boobs). It's a Rowanjoy dress that I picked up at a sample sale last year and I wore it for my birthday night. It really is quite lovely and it was great to get it out again, although all the adventuring and sitting made it a tad wrinkled (don't look). The dress is a one-off but I know that Vintage Style Me has a pretty good Suzy Bishop alternative, named Suzy for her!

Although Suzy wears knee high socks, I made the look more grown up and wearable by pairing simple vintage style shoes with the homemade mini suitcase- perfect for all my old books. Suzy strikes a chord with me by taking those essentials with her while running away from home. I wish we'd had time and energy to make the additional touches- like the love notes, inventory and the How To Deal With Your Troubled Child book. Binoculars are a great extra if you're making a costume, too.
"Does Suzy Bishop wear glasses?" No, she doesn't. But I do, so why not make them ridiculous retro pink ones? It's what Suzy would have wanted.

For the setting, we headed across the water to Tentsmuir Forest in Fife. It had the perfect balance of both beachy sand dunes and forest for the island surroundings. I have never been here before (in fact, I didn't even really know it existed) but it's definitely a place I'd like to return to. I love walking but I wasn't exactly dressed for the occasion (maybe should've stayed true to those brogues and knee highs). If you follow me on social media you'll know that I have recently been adventuring around Perthshire with a trip north to see the Enchanted Forest. I think between this photo shoot and my Pitlochry weekend, I've managed to eek out those final days of warm Autumn before we have to wrap up all cosy for Scottish winter, but I'm hoping to head back to Tentsmuir in spring to have a better look round. And maybe pop by Anstruther to see if their fish and chips can really rival that of Arbroath.

This shoot was so fun to do and I suspect it won't be our last Wes Anderson homage. Remember, you can also join in on our Unlikely Style Icons by emailing us with an idea to dress up with us for Be Our Guest, or tweet us a theme and we'll maybe have a go (if it's ridiculous enough.) Can you rival the milk style theme though?
